Making the Most of Your Flooring Installation
Your flooring has a significant impact on the aesthetics of your home. One of the major things that impact the service life of a floor is how it is installed. Your home needs to be adequately prepared for a flooring installation. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent confusion. Clearly define the scope of your project and make a to-do list.
Here are some tips to make your installation project go smoothly.
Set Reminders
This may seem unnecessary to point out, but you do not want to be caught unaware when the installation team shows up at your doorstep. If you have pets or children, make sure they’re out of the installation area so the installation team can work uninterrupted.
Create a Plan
Last-minute changes may affect your project scope and budget. Make all important design decisions, such as deciding the layout, pattern, and direction of your new floor, before starting the installation.
Before Rugworks starts the installation project, we check the materials selected. Many materials are delivered ahead of time to allow it to acclimate to your home. Make sure to open a carton and inspect a handful of boards to make sure it is the right product. Most products, especially natural products such as wood, can look slightly different then the sample you choose from. Keep this in mind when inspecting the materials. A temperature of at least 65 degrees is generally required for all installation of flooring materials. Make sure your heating and air conditioning is working properly and set to your preferences. This is especially important in new construction. Many contractors do not have the HVAC system up and operational. This should be done at least seven days before the flooring is delivered for acclimation and left on throughout the installation. If this is not done, it can cause numerous issues after the construction crews are done.
Designate Areas
Have a designated area to cut and stage materials. Choose an area close to the installation site. Consider clearing out an area in your garage to use as the staging area. Make sure the designated area has access to electricity.
Make Sure You and Your Contractor Know Who is Doing What
Before the project installation day, discuss important things with your contractor. Make sure there is no confusion. Decide who will be responsible for moving furniture and removing your existing flooring.
Use a detailed checklist to decide items upfront. Both you and your contractor should review this information prior to the installation day. This will help avoid delays or rescheduling.
Once the project is over, store warranty and maintenance documents in a safe place. If something goes wrong, you will need these documents to prove your claims. Follow contractor and manufacturer instructions to maintain warranties.
